We all know the dread of a dirty oven. Baked-on spills, greasy splatters, and a lingering burnt smell can make cooking a lot less enjoyable. And while store-bought oven cleaners are effective, they often come with strong fumes and harsh chemicals that you might not want to use in your kitchen. Even if your oven has a self clean function, it is a good idea to pre-clean your oven if the spills and grease are extensive.
The good news? You can achieve a sparkling clean oven using simple, natural ingredients you likely already have in your pantry. At Emerald Green Cleans, we love using eco-friendly methods that are safe for your family, pets, and the environment.
Here’s our favorite go-to method for a natural, deep oven clean:
What You'll Need:
Baking soda
Water
White vinegar (in a spray bottle)
A bowl or cup
Rubber gloves (optional, but a good idea!)
A damp cloth or sponge
A plastic or silicone spatula (for tough spots)
Step-by-Step Guide:
1. Prep Your Oven First, remove everything from your oven—the racks, any baking trays, and a pizza stone if you have one. Set them aside.
2. Make the Cleaning Paste In a bowl, mix about 1/2 cup of baking soda with a few tablespoons of water. Stir until you have a thick, spreadable paste. The consistency should be similar to pancake batter or toothpaste. You can adjust the ratio as needed.
3. Apply the Paste Put on your gloves and use your hands or a spatula to spread the paste all over the interior surfaces of your oven. Avoid the heating elements. The paste will turn a brownish color as you rub it into the grime—that's a good thing! Pay extra attention to the grimiest areas and the inside of the oven door.
4. Let It Work Its Magic This is the key to success. Let the baking soda paste sit for at least a few hours, or even better, leave it overnight (12 hours is ideal!). This gives the baking soda time to break down the baked-on grease and food.
5. Tackle the Racks While you wait, you can clean the oven racks. Place them in a bathtub or large sink. Fill it with hot water and add a few drops of dish soap. Let them soak for a few hours. The grime will loosen, making them easy to scrub with a sponge.
6. Wipe It All Away After the paste has had time to work, take a damp cloth and wipe out as much of the dried paste as you can. You'll be amazed at how easily the gunk comes off. For stubborn, stuck-on spots, use a plastic spatula to gently scrape away the loosened grime.
7. The Vinegar Rinse Once most of the paste is gone, spray the inside of your oven with white vinegar from your spray bottle. The vinegar will react with any remaining baking soda, creating a satisfying fizzing foam. This neutralizes the baking soda and helps to wipe away any last bits of residue.
8. Final Polish Give the entire oven a final wipe-down with a clean, damp cloth. Dry with a paper towel or microfiber cloth to reveal a sparkling, chemical-free oven. Slide your freshly cleaned racks back in, and you're ready to cook!
